The president of Mexico and WBSC Global Ambassador Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador awarded the Premio Nacional de Deportes (National Sports Award) to the Mexico National Women’s Softball Team. Mexican baseball legend Fernando Valenzuela was also awarded for his outstanding career.

The Mexican National Sports Award is the highest sports honour in the country. The awards ceremony will be hosted by Mexican President and WBSC Global Ambassador Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on 20 November.

The Americas qualifier was played at Softball City in Surrey, Canada, and was softball’s second Olympic qualifier of the year.

The South American classic was played on Day 3 of the event, with both teams trying to keep their Olympic dreams alive.

Mexico qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time as four nations - Australia, Canada, Italy the others - secured their berth for the softball’s historic return to the Olympic Programme at Tokyo 2020, joining hosts Japan and 2018 world championship winners USA.

Canada became today the fifth qualified nation for the Olympic Games softball competition in Tokyo 2020. The host team secured its ticket with a 7-0, five-innings win over Brazil. Kaleigh Rafter belted a walkoff homerun to center field in the bottom fo the fifth episode and sent Canada to its fifth Olympic Games.
