Great Britain one win away from Olympics after 4-2 victory over Czech Republic

Great Britain remained undefeated at the WBSC Softball Europe Africa Olympic Qualifier thanks to a 4-2 victory against Czech Republic in Utrecht on Friday. In this way, the British team stayed at the top of the Final Round with a 2-0 record, while the Czech one is out of the Olympic Qualifier with no wins in two games. Georgina Corrick went the distance again, pitching a complete game, and got the win. Veronica Peckova suffered the loss.

After playing two weeks ago for the bronze medal in the European Championships, Great Britain and Czech Republic played against each other in another important game. Great Britain, who entered the Super Round with a 1-0 record, selected Georgina Corrick as starting pitcher. On the other side, Czech Republic, who had to to win this game to keep its Olympics dreams alive, gave the ball to Veronica Peckova as a starter.

At the beginning of the game, Great Britain had the first occasion to score but it couldn’t. With two outs and a runner on second, Alica Wolny struck out swinging. In the second inning, Czech Republic put two runners on bases. Ludmila Kucerova and Lucie Petraskova singled. Later, with two outs, Kucerova stole third. However, Weissova flied out foul.

Great Britain broke the tied game in the third frame. With one out, Sydney Brown was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Later Aubrey Peterson singled. In the same action, Brown scored to make it 1-0 thanks to a defensive error.

The British team added two more runs in the next two innings. In the fourth, Amy Moore and Chloe Wigington singled before moving to scoring positions on wild pitches. Peckova struck out two batters but Snow, who had replaced Moore to run, scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth frame, Peterson opened with a single, while Myers and Wolny walked. Lauren Evans hit an RBI single off Martina Blahova, who had entered the game for Peckova.

The Czech Republic reduced the deficit one inning later. Veronica Klimplova tripled to right and Tereza Jakesova walked. Then, Klimplova scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-1. After Kubicova was walked, Kucerova bunted and moved the runners to a scoring position. Later, Petraskova plated Jakesova from third with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the sixth, Great Britain extended the lead to 4-2. Hutchinson was walked and Burge reached first on an error before Hutchinson moved to third. With two outs, Myers was intentionally walked to load the bases before Wolny was walked to stretch GB’s lead to two.

On Saturday, Great Britain will play Italy, while the Czech Republic will face the Netherlands in the last day of the Olympic Qualifier.
