Lawrie, Caira pitch perfect game as Canada tops Guatemala in four

Danielle Lawrie and Jenna Caira combined for a 4-inning, 8-strikeouts perfect game against Guatemala, in a 19-0 one-sided game. Canada used a pair of 8-run innings to collect its second win of the event.

Canada opened the game with a furious 8-hit, 8-run first inning, including a 2-run home run by Kelsey Jenkins and an inside the park grand slam by Victoria Hayward, who collected 5 RBI in the game.

A run-scoring single to Janet Leung plated the only Canadian run of the second inning. And in the top of the third Canada opened with back to back doubles by Jenkins and Jennifer Gilbert, who later scored on a defensive error.

In the fourth episode, Canada launched seven hits, including a 2-RBI double by Jenn Salling and a double by Jenkins, who totalled 4 hits (2 doubles), 3 RBI and 3 runs.

Daniele Lawrie struck out the seven of the eight hitters she faced, including the first five in a row. She retired the sixth out of the game with a grounder to second base. Jenna Caira retired the last 4 outs of the game, with 1 K. It was the second perfect game of the tournament.

Canada is still undefeated and tomorrow will play its third game against Puerto Rico, at 6:00 p.m., in a game that could be crucial for the final standings of the tournament. Guatemala will take on Cuba at 3:30 p.m.
