Rafter, Gilbert homer as Canada tops Venezuela

Kaleigh Rafter and Jennifer Gilbert homered for Canada in an 11-0, four-inning victory over Venezuela, in the first day of the Super Round. The host team delivered a total of 13 hits in its three offensive opportunities, and with this score have secured one of the four available spots in the next WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup.

Canada scored five times in the bottom of the first inning, on a 2-RBI single by Holly Speers, a run-scoring single by Jenn Salling and a monster 2-run home run by Kaleigh Rafter that landed in the top half of the bleachers.

One inning later Kelsey Jenkins plated Victoria Hayward with a double to left field and scored on the second RBI single of the game by Salling.

And in the third episode, Jenkins singled in Emma Etminzger, and Gilbert belted an opposite-field 3-run homer to make it 11-0.

From the circle Danielle Lawrie was nearly unhittable, allowing only 1 hit in four episodes, a single off the bat of veteran Maria Soto in the top of the first inning. Lawrie fanned 4 hitters.

With this result, Canada remains undefeated in the tournament and is on top of the Super Round standings. Tomorrow they will take on Mexico, the other undefeated team, aiming to secure the ticket to Tokyo 2020. Venezuela was eliminated of the Olympic race.
